Hiking boots give you a sturdy and safe footing on the trail and protection against the elements.
However, with so many distinct types and brands on the market, selecting which ones are suitable for you might be difficult.
This FAQ will help you understand the different features of hiking shoes and give you some tips on choosing the best pair.
What size hiking boots should I get?
This is a question that many hikers have, but there is no definitive answer.
The best way to determine the right size boot for you is to try them on in person and walk around in them a bit.
However, if you’re shopping online, you’ll want to be familiar with the store’s return policy if the boots don’t fit quite right.
But should you get a smaller or bigger size?
Generally, you want your hiking boots to be snug but not too tight.
You also want to make sure there’s enough room in the toe box, so your toes don’t feel cramped.
If you’re between sizes, it’s usually better to go with the bigger size since you can always add an extra pair of socks or use an insole to get a better fit.
How tight should hiking boots be?
Are you one of those hikers who agonizes over whether or not to bring an extra pair of socks on your hike?
You’re not alone.
There’s nothing worse than having blisters halfway through a hike, but how tight should hiking boots be to avoid them?
The answer is: It depends.
If your boots are too tight, they’ll rub against your skin and cause pain.
It’s important to find a balance.
Your hiking boots should be snug but not too tight.
Tip: In my other post, I explain what you should look for when buying new shoes for hiking.
How to tell if hiking boots are too small?
When you’re shopping for hiking boots, it’s important to make sure you get the right size.
Here are a few tips on how to tell if hiking boots are too small:
- Your toes feel cramped or uncomfortable.
- You can’t wiggle your toes.
- Your heel slips out when you walk.
- You have to force your foot into the boot.
If any of these things are happening, it’s a sign that your boots are too small.
Don’t hesitate to try on a different size or return them for a refund.
How to tell if hiking boots are too big?
A too big hiking boot can be just as much of a problem as a small one.
If your boots are too big, they’ll rub against your heel and cause blisters.
They’ll also make it difficult to walk, and you might end up tripping.
Here are a few tips on how to tell if hiking boots are too big:
- Your heel slips when you walk.
- You can wiggle your foot around inside the boot.
- The boot feels loose and sloppy.
If any of these things are happening, it’s time to try on a different size.
Don’t forget to bring along some thick hiking socks so you can get a better idea of how the boots will fit.
Do hiking boots stretch?
Maybe you get a too-small pair of hiking boots, wondering if they’ll stretch out with time.
The answer is: It depends.
Some materials, like leather, will stretch with time and wear.
Other materials, like synthetic fabrics, won’t stretch much at all.
If you’re not sure if your boots will stretch, it’s always best to try them on in person so you can exchange them if they don’t fit.

Hiking boots provide ankle support and protection from the elements, which are important on the challenging trails in Zion.

Are safety shoes good for hiking?
I know that’s a bit of a strange question, but it’s one that beginners occasionally ask.
The short answer is that safety shoes are not typically designed for hiking.
They are usually heavier and not as comfortable as regular hiking boots.
With safety shoes, you will not be happy on long hikes.
Some safety shoes have low tops and might be suitable for shorter hikes, but I would not recommend them for anything more than that.
Stick with regular hiking boots!
Can you hike in rain boots?
In my opinion, classic rain boots are not suitable for hiking.
But there are now special rain boots designed for hikers, and they can be a good option in certain situations.
The main thing to consider with rain boots is the weight. They are typically much heavier than regular hiking boots, so you will get tired more quickly if you’re hiking long distances in them.
Another thing to consider is the traction.
Some rain boots have good traction, and others don’t.
So, if you’re planning on hiking in slippery or wet conditions, be sure to get a pair of rain boots with good traction.
Besides that, rain boots can be a suitable option for hiking, as long as you keep the above things in mind.
Want to do a short hike through wet areas because you’re fishing along the way, then rain boots would be an option.
But for strenuous hikes, I would always recommend classic hiking boots.
